Chess Lessons

Note (10/29/2022): I am not currently accepting new students. But please feel free to email me if you are interested in future group lessons. If enough interest exists, I may create a virtual group class geared toward beginners (equivalent to < 1200 USCF strength).

Hello, my name is Eddie Wyckoff, and I like chess!

As a teacher by profession during the COVID-19 pandemic, I have become very comfortable with distance learning and tutoring in STEM subjects and chess. I cover all aspects of the game (opening, middlegame, and endgame), and I have taught a seasoned variety of age levels, from age 7 to 70. My experience:

Chess Skills  

> Peak rating of 2052 [which is USCF Expert Level] (see my rating history here).  

> Owner of ABQ Chess Features; weekly serial chess columnist for the Albuquerque Journal (Jan. 2017-present). Check out some of my featured articles.

> Received a commendation (page 18) in the 2020 FIDE World Cup in Composing (for those unfamiliar, this is among the highest chess competitions in the world for creating chess puzzles and studies).

> Author of Chess Puzzle Learning Levels (Vol. I & II; published 2016, 2018) and ABQ Chess (published June 2020).

> Featured in “My Best Move,” a column in the national magazine Chess Life (Nov. 2017).

> Published a joint study with GM Pal Benko in same publication (Jun. 2013).

> Top finisher in several local tournament events, including the Albuquerque/Rio Rancho Open, Reserve Section (2014, 1st place); Albuquerque Open (2017, 1st place); NM Closed Championship (2017, shared 2nd place).  

Education

> M.A. in Secondary Education with Licensure, UNM Class of 2019.

> Completed the Albuquerque Teacher Residency Partnership (ATRP), a rigorous program that combined master’s coursework in education with a full year of student teaching.

> B. Sc. Chemistry, UNM Class of 2018. Graduated with cum laude baccalaureate honors.

Cost
